    Justifications in Constraint Handling Rules for Logical Retraction in Dynamic Algorithms

    We present a straightforward source-to-source transformation that introduces justifications for user-defined constraints into the CHR programming language. Then a scheme of two rules suffices to allow for logical retraction (deletion, removal) of constraints during computation. Without the need to recompute from scratch, these rules remove not only the constraint but also undo all consequences of the rule applications that involved the constraint. We prove a confluence result concerning the rule scheme and show its correctness. When algorithms are written in CHR, constraints represent both data and operations. CHR is already incremental by nature, i.e. constraints can be added at runtime. Logical retraction adds decrementality. Hence any algorithm written in CHR with justifications will become fully dynamic. Operations can be undone and data can be removed at any point in the computation without compromising the correctness of the result.     Quantum Weakly Nondeterministic Communication Complexity

    We study the weakest model of quantum nondeterminism in which a classical proof has to be checked with probability one by a quantum protocol. We show the first separation between classical nondeterministic communication complexity and this model of quantum nondeterministic communication complexity for a total function.     Spatio-temporal genetic structure and gene flow between two distinct shell morphs of the planktonic developing periwinkle <i>Littorina striata</i> (Mollusca : Prosobranchia)

    The planktonic developing periwinkle Littorina striata produces both nodulose and smooth shells, which were originally regarded as 2 separate species. Although both morphs occur microsympatrically, their distribution is not random. Nodulose shells predominate at wave-sheltered sites, whereas smooth shells are more common at wave-exposed sites. The degree of genetic similarity between the 2 shell types and their microgeographic spatio-temporal genetic structuring were investigated using allozyme electrophoresis. This indicated that: (1) both morphs share a common gene pool, (2) gene flow between populations is high and of comparable magnitude to gene flow between both morphs, (3) the population genetic structure of L. striata remains stable over a sampling period of 3 yr, and (4) genetic and morphological distances between populations are not correlated. These results thus confirm the conspecific status of the 2 shell types and suggest that shell variability and spatial patterning in L. striata persist in the presence of intense gene flow

    Large-scale albuminuria screen for nephropathy models in chemically induced mouse mutants

    Background/Aim: Phenotype-driven screening of a great pool of randomly mutant mice and subsequent selection of animals showing symptoms equivalent to human kidney diseases may result in the generation of novel suitable models for the study of the pathomechanisms and the identification of genes involved in kidney dysfunction. Methods: We carried out a large-scale analysis of ethylnitrosourea (ENU)-induced mouse mutants for albuminuria by using qualitative SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Results: The primary albuminuria screen preceded the comprehensive phenotypic mutation analysis in a part of the mice of the Munich ENU project to avoid loss of mutant animals as a consequence of prolonged suffering from severe nephropathy. The primary screen detected six confirmed phenotypic variants in 2,011 G1 animals screened for dominant mutations and no variant in 48 G3 pedigrees screened for recessive mutations. Further breeding experiments resulted in two lines showing a low phenotypic penetrance of albuminuria. The secondary albuminuria screen was carried out in mutant lines which were established in the Munich ENU project without preceding primary albuminuria analysis. Two lines showing increased plasma urea levels were chosen to clarify if severe kidney lesions are involved in the abnormal phenotype. This analysis revealed severe albuminuria in mice which are affected by a recessive mutation leading to increased plasma urea and cholesterol levels. Conclusion: Thus, the phenotypic selection of ENU-induced mutants according to the parameter proteinuria in principle demonstrates the feasibility to identify nephropathy phenotypes in ENU-mutagenized mice.     The specific fauna and flora of the natural reserve "Het Zwin" are generated by the seawater that streams in and out of the channels of the reserve at each tide. This water transports sand and mud, that are deposited in the channels and on the inundated surfaces. This way the chanels and saltmarshes are silting up gradually.The international Belgian-Dutch Commission of the Zwin has decided to stop the silting up and to maintain the Zwin as a salty tidal area.In 1987 a technical committee was established to deliberate on the mesures that had to be taken. In 1989 the main channel was deepened and a sandtrap introduced.This article represents mainly the calculations on mathematical model by Flanders Hydraulics to estimate the influence of different proposed solutions.Alternative managements are examined concerning their effect on the ecological values, the landscape and the recreational values of the Zwin.The international Commission of the Zwin has approuved a project in phases, where alternatives are combined to maintain and fortify the natural values of the Zwin

    Uncertainty on coastal flood risk calculations, and how to deal with it in coastal management: case of the Belgian coastal zone

    A coastal flood risk calculation estimates the damage by coastal flooding for a certain time horizon. Fivedifferent sources of uncertainty can be distinguished: unpredictability of the weather; uncertainty on theextreme value probability distribution of storm surges; unknown future values of economic growth rate,population growth rate, sea level rise rate and discount rate; limited knowledge of the behaviour of thecoastal system; limited amount of measurements about the state of the coastal system. From a preliminaryanalysis for the Belgian coastal zone it is clear that the combined effect of these different sources ofuncertainty results in a very large uncertainty on the calculated risk, namely a sigma of a factor more than10. Some important sources of uncertainty are impossible to decrease substantially by doing research ormeasurements. Therefore the only option for coastal management is to deal with these large uncertainties.It is suggested to use calculation results relatively, namely to compare scenarios of coastal management inorder to determine which scenario can best use an available budget for investment. Also it is concludedthat risk calculation results would best be compared as ratios between scenarios (in %), not as differences(in euro/year)

    Fundamental limitations in the purifications of tensor networks

    We show a fundamental limitation in the description of quantum many-body mixed states with tensor networks in purification form. Namely, we show that there exist mixed states which can be represented as a translationally invariant (TI) matrix product density operator (MPDO) valid for all system sizes, but for which there does not exist a TI purification valid for all system sizes. The proof is based on an undecidable problem and on the uniqueness of canonical forms of matrix product states.     Oxygen superstructures throughout the phase diagram of (Y,Ca)Ba2Cu3O6+x\bf (Y,Ca)Ba_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}

    Short-range lattice superstructures have been studied with high-energy x-ray diffuse scattering in underdoped, optimally doped, and overdoped (Y,Ca)Ba2Cu3O6+x\rm (Y,Ca)Ba_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}. A new four-unit-cell superstructure was observed in compounds with x0.95x\sim 0.95. Its temperature, doping, and material dependence was used to attribute its origin to short-range oxygen vacancy ordering, rather than electronic instabilities in the CuO2\rm CuO_2 layers. No significant diffuse scattering is observed in YBa2_2Cu4_4O8_{8}. The oxygen superstructures must be taken into account when interpreting spectral anomalies in (Y,Ca)Ba2Cu3O6+x\rm (Y,Ca)Ba_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}
